Abstract

We present J1221 - 1354, a precessing AGN discovered in the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) using deep L-band (0.9--1.6,GHz) radio data. Its `S'-shaped morphology, revealed by the excellent surface brightness sensitivity of MeerKAT, is consistent with jet precession. Ancillary optical and infrared data establish the source as a Type 2 AGN in a moderately overdense environment. The approaching (southern) jet is brighter but shorter than the receding jet, with the northern edge of the receding jet showing a significantly younger spectral age. These features are peculiar, but consistent with a jet reorientation event in an asymmetric ambient medium, in which the jet re-enters a cavity of previously deposited plasma. A simple ballistic model yields a precession period of P=290 plus or minus30,Myr, consistent with geodetic precession in a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) with a binary separation of less than 1.1,pc. We expect that deep radio continuum surveys in the near future will uncover many more such systems, helping to further strengthen the connection between jet precession and SMBHBs, and the latter's implications for the gravitational-wave background detected with pulsar timing arrays.
