Terms and Conditions

These are the terms for using Paper Radio. By using the site you agree to them; if you do not agree with them, please do not use it.

What Paper Radio is

Paper Radio is an experimental service that writes and voices summaries of research papers with AI, so that you can listen to new work instead of reading it.

An episode is a summary, not the paper. It can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, and it is neither the authors' own words nor their views. Check the source before you rely on anything you hear.

Your account

You need an account to follow shows, keep favourites, comment, or order a Fast Track. Keep your sign-in method secure and do not share your account: you are responsible for what happens through it.

You can stop using Paper Radio at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account.

Using the site fairly

What you post

Your comments stay yours. By posting one you give us permission to show it on the site with your display name, and to keep showing it until you delete it — deletion is yours to do, and when you delete a comment it goes.

Material you upload yourself — a show premise, a script, a document, artwork, a voice or a recording — stays yours. By uploading it you give Paper Radio a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store it, transcribe it, synthesise audio from it, publish it on the site and in the feeds and embeds we publish, and to promote it. That licence lasts while the material is on the site; anything already delivered (an episode a listener downloaded, a page a crawler fetched) can survive in caches we do not control.

Upload only material you have the right to license to us this way. For anything else, link to it.

Fast Track orders

A Fast Track order moves a paper's episode to the front of the queue and buys the extra verification pass, as the order page describes. Payment is handled by Stripe; card details never reach us.

If we cannot fulfil an order, we refund it. Contact us about anything that goes wrong with one.

A paper whose licence forbids commercial use is not eligible for Fast Track, and the episode page says so instead of offering it. If an order cannot be accepted for that reason, nothing is charged.

Content and ownership

The papers belong to their authors and are served by arXiv. The shows, episodes, scripts and this site belong to Paper Radio.

You may listen, share links, and quote short extracts. Do not republish whole episodes or scraped transcripts as your own.

Research papers are not ours. We link to arXiv, and we reproduce a paper's own text — its abstract, its PDF, its page images — only where that paper's licence allows redistribution, such as CC BY, CC BY-SA or CC0. Where the licence does not allow it (arXiv's default non-exclusive licence, or a licence we cannot identify), we publish none of it: not on the episode page, not on the paper page, and not to search engines. Where a licence asks for attribution, a licence notice, or share-alike terms, we show it beside the paper.

Some paper licences forbid commercial use. For those papers we do not sell anything: Fast Track orders are not offered, and no paid feature is applied to them. The paper's page says which licence it carries, and that page decides what we may serve.

Availability

Paper Radio is experimental and free to listen to. We may change it, pause a show, or stop the service, and we do not promise that it will be available at any particular time.

No warranty, and what we are responsible for

The service is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for decisions you take from listening to an episode.

Nothing in these terms limits a liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights under the law where you live.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; when we do, we update the date below. Continuing to use Paper Radio after a change means you accept the new terms.
