Abstract
In this work, we present a novel approach for extracting cosmological information from cosmic shear maps based on topological defects in the shear orientation field. These defects are defined purely by the phase structure of the shear field and are therefore complementary to conventional weak lensing statistics that primarily probe amplitude information. We characterise their statistical properties, including number densities, spatial clustering, and the convergence distribution at defect locations, and demonstrate with Fisher analyses under idealised and realistic survey conditions that topological defect statistics provide a valuable and complementary source of cosmological information. With Euclid-like simulated data, the inclusion of defect statistics leads to constraints on Ω m and σ 8 that are up to 3.9 times tighter than those obtained from the convergence two-point correlation function alone.
