The gist: Magnetic-field-dependent nanoparticle size does not by itself determine zeta potential, which also depends on interfacial charge, electrolyte screening, and the location of the slipping plane.

Abstract

Magnetic-field-dependent nanoparticle size does not by itself determine zeta potential, which also depends on interfacial charge, electrolyte screening, and the location of the slipping plane. We extend the sphere-packing description of silver nanoparticles by distinguishing the structural surface, the effective charge plane, and the hydrodynamic slipping plane. The model uses structural radii of nm and nm at zero field and mT, with reported zeta potentials of mV and mV. Effective charge is related to the defective-shell atom count. For field-independent interfacial parameters, the linear response without additional charge weighting decreases with decreasing radius. Its normalized form depends on three electrokinetic lengths through only two sums, preventing their independent determination from a field-dependent zeta curve. At (κ-1,t lig,δ slip)=(3,0,1), nm, nonlinear Poisson--Boltzmann electrostatics changes the fitted shell coefficient from 0.316 to 0.299. Constant total charge still predicts an increase in zeta magnitude, opposite to the observed trend in the evaluated scenarios. Independently calibrated shell and area charge laws differ by less than mV, so the endpoint agreement does not distinguish these mechanisms. Propagating the initial size frequencies gives a narrower endpoint size distribution than measured. With charge parameters determined from the measured size populations, its predicted mean zeta potential is mV, with standard deviation mV. Imposing the measured mean by charge recalibration does not remove the discrepancy in size width. The combined structural and electrokinetic model thus identifies both the size-dependent contribution to zeta potential and the interfacial information needed to interpret it.
