Abstract

An analysis of the distribution of signs of the longitudinal magnetic field component B z is presented for a sample of 307 chemically peculiar (CP) stars with reliably measured magnetic fields. For each star, the root-mean-square field B rms and the extreme values of B z are used to classify the field configuration as either reversive or non-reversive. Among the 173 non-reversive stars, 100 exhibit a predominantly negative B z sign, while only 73 display a positive sign, corresponding to an excess of negative polarities by a factor of about 1.37. A subsample of stars with at least five independent measurements (254 objects) yields a similar ratio of 1.38, confirming the robustness of the asymmetry. The observed predominance of negative B z values among non-reversive CP stars in the solar neighbourhood is statistically significant. Possible origins of this asymmetry remain unclear and will be addressed in future studies.
